Use Password Protection!
This is probably the most important thing you can do. If you don't protect access to your device with a password, anything else you do, including using software like eCrypt, will be futile. It's kind of like buying an alarm system but leaving your door wide open.
Try to change your password frequently. Once a month is good practice.
How To Set Up Password Protection
· From the Home screen of the BlackBerry® smartphone, click Options.
· Click Security Options.
· Click General Settings.
Note: If you are running BlackBerry System Software 4.0.2 or earlier, click Options, then Security.
· Change the Password field to Enabled.
· Display the menu and click Save.
· Type your new password and click Enter.
· Verify your new password by typing it again and click Enter
For optimum security, your password should be changed intermittently, and never re-used.
For information on how to change your Password, refer to the User Guide for your BlackBerry® smartphone (found at: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/docs/ ).
What Constitutes A Strong Password?
Use STRONG and UNIQUE passwords. For most of us, our lives are filled with passwords, so in an effort to simplify things for ourselves, we use short and guessable passwords, sometimes even one password for multiple applications. THIS IS DANGEROUS! Using weak passwords makes you vulnerable to hackers and other unwanted intruders.
A strong password is a password that:
· |
is 8 characters long or longer |
· |
includes the alphabet, as well as numbers and special characters (despite this, many online stores and profiles still don't allow special characters such as $ or % in passwords) |
· |
includes both upper and lowercase letters |
· |
does not include repeated characters, for example 111aaa$$ or 33333333
· |
does not include sequences like 12345678, abcdefg |
· |
is not the same as the user name or a variation of it |
· |
does not use substitutions such as "pa$5w0rd", or "n0t@home"
· |
is not, and doesn’t look like, a word found in the dictionary |
· |
is not related to you, like your birthday, family member's name, etc |
To create a secure password that is both strong and easy to remember, a helpful method is to use the first character of every word/character in a sentence you can easily remember.
For example: My Favorite # is 13 Because That's the Day I Was Born = MF#i1BTtDIWB
